Managing it all for busy Trustees
This taster course looks at how Trustees, who may wear several hats, can differentiate between governance tasks and day-to-day ones and why that focus is important. It looks at how to build capacity and competence.
This is an intermediate level course
Trustees often perform a variety of jobs, some very hands-on and some being more about taking oversight. As organisations grow, the original volunteers or steering group gradually need to start thinking about "governance". This course will explore how these functions and tasks are different from the day-to-day management that everyone may be doing at the moment. Things like plans and budgets happen in between the real work, but now you need to become more systematic about it all.
This is not an easy step for some supporters to take and so the organisation may need to think about how to use the skills of people who are not interested in the governance side.
Specifically, we will look at:
- Too much to do, too little time?
- What's the difference between operations and governance activities?
Why does it matter who is doing what?
How can these be differentiated?
- Taking a structured approach
- Building capacity and competence
- How you can use the skills of people with specialist knowledge
- Developing your governance
You do not need to know anything about these issues - no prior knowledge is assumed.
By the end of this course you will really understand what governance is and why these jobs are important for the future of your organisation. You will have a list of the ways in which your organisation can split out these functions from day-to-day operations when the time is right.
